Honesty

Have each member of the family prepare 1 true statement and 1 lie statement about themselves. Everyone gets a turn and must reveal the two statements and the rest of the family will guess which one is the truth and which one is a lie. The person with the most correct answers wins the game!
In this lesson, we will learn what the Bible says about telling the truth.

Honesty is one of Godโs commandments and He teaches us how He values honesty. God is truth and He does not lie. He set Himself as the example and desires us to follow Him in all that we say or do.
Sometimes it is not always easy to tell the truth. We do not like the consequences that come with truth, like being punished. But choosing to lie makes it more horrible because we are always in fear of when the truth will come out. But Jesus is truth. And when we have Jesus in our hearts, we can learn to speak the truth even when it is difficult.
Being honest is a non ending process of learning and obeying. The more we know Jesus Christ who is the truth, the more we can change to be like Him.

Parent to Kid/s:
2-6 years old
โ Was there a time you did not tell the truth? Why did you do it? (Parents, focus more on โwhyโ, not on โwhatโ. This would also be a good time to reassure your little kids of your love for them even if they had done something they should not have done.)
7-12 years old
โ Think of a time when you felt you had to hide the truth. How did you feel? Did you eventually admit to the truth? (Parents, you can reassure the kids of your love for them.)
โ What are some ways you have in mind to demonstrate honesty?
Kid/s to Parent:
โ Have you been dishonest before? Why did you do it?
โ Why is honesty important in our family and with other people? Is being honest to the family is also being honest to God?
Honesty builds strong relationships in the family. Sometimes we donโt realize we are lying by exaggerating a story and even telling white lies. Lies separate us from God and from people we love, but honesty connects and binds us together. When you are honest to your family, at the same time, you are also being honest to God.
God loves us so much that He wants us to be called children of God. He wants nothing hidden, nothing private, and nothing secret from us. It means that God wants a deep relationship with us thatโs why He wants us to be truthful in everything, and that honors Him.

Father,
Thank You for being our ultimate standard of truth. We humbly ask for Your forgiveness when we have been untruthful. We are grateful for your love that You want us restored to be trustworthy of our relationship with You, with family and with people we know. May we always have the desire to always speak and act in all honesty, and to live a life of integrity. In Jesusโ name,
Amen.

Do you know that honesty comes in different forms:
โ Telling the truth at all times
โ Not telling white lies
โ Being true to yourself, not pretending to be someone else
โ Not hiding the truth (deception)
โ Being truthful even when no one can see you or no one can find out the truth
Can you think of other ways to demonstrate honesty?
Honesty truly comes from the heart. Letโs purpose in our hearts that we will be honest at all times.
