β€œYour turn!”

Game instructions: Everybody will sit in a circle. Designate a game master. Pick a spot on the center of the circle. This will be called The Spot. The game master will ask a question. To determine who will answer first, everybody races to put their hands on The Spot. Note the order of hands on the stack starting from the bottom. This will be the order of answering the game master’s question, starting from the bottom most and working your way to the top most. Game master will turn to the first person and say β€œYour turn!”, and after he answers, Game master turns to the next person and say β€œYour turn!”, until everyone has answered. The last person must perform a task / consequence (like do a dance, let everybody tickle him, be assigned a chore, etc).

Repeat until you finish your list of questions.

Questions can go like these:
Question 1: Which food do you like better, fried chicken or spaghetti?
Question 2: Which color do you like better, green or yellow?
Question 3: Which flower do you like better, rose or sunflower?
Question 4: Which toy do you like better, claydough or bubble maker?
Question 5: Which greeting do you like better, tight hug or a kiss on the cheek?

Or you may choose to venture to a different line of questions.

Tip: The activity should remind your child not to speak if it is not his/her turn. You can model this by being silent during your child’s turn to answer.

Great job on answering the questions! It surely helped that you listened and did not speak when it wasn’t your turn yet. Do you know that listening to others is a sign of respect? It is an act of honoring a person which Jesus reminds us in our Bible verse today.

Romans 12:10

We often hear from our parents and teachers that we should always respect each other. This reminder is not because of culture or traditions but it is written in the Bible. Jesus wants us to respect and honor one another. This means we put others ahead of ourselves. Why? Because we are all created in God’s image and in God’s eyes, we are all equal. Whenever we do not show respect or honor others, it’s like devaluing the creation of God.

How do we show respect and honor? For starters, we can treat everyone equally, not giving special treatment to people because of their position or wealth. Another way is by listening to others when they are talking (just like we did in the game). We can also show respect to others by not speaking ill of them, especially when they are not around.

2-6 years old
● Do you listen to your parents when they talk to you?
● What do you do when your friend is crying? (Not laughing at a friend who is crying is also a sign of respect)

7-12 years old
● Do you find it easy or difficult to show respect and honor others? In what way?
● How can you practice respect in your home? In school?

Kid/s to Parent:
● How do you honor others when sometimes it is difficult to do so?
● Should you respect those who have not shown respect to you?
● As I try my best to listen to you, how can you also practice listening better to me?

Realistically, sometimes it is not so easy to show respect to others especially if they have not treated us well. But the Bible still commands us to do so. Remember that when we respect others, we are honoring God by honoring His creation.

Dear God,

We thank You for teaching us to respect each other. Sometimes we forget this when we are angry, sad or afraid. Please forgive us for these moments and continue to remind us that we can always honor each other despite our bad feelings because You have loved and honored us first, despite our own sins.

Thank You also for giving us our mothers. Thank You for all the love and sacrifice she has given for our family. Bless her always with good health and much love. In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

In the Philippines, we honor older people through a gesture called β€œMano”. The respectful greeting is performed by bowing towards the hand of an elder and pressing the forehead on the back of the elder's right hand. This traditional act of respect is well received by the elders who in turn speak blessing to the person.

β€œMano” is Spanish for β€œhand” which makes it easier to remember the next time you want to show respect to an older Filipino person. Just don’t forget to ask permission to do it by simply saying, β€œMano po”.

If you’re not from the Philippines, what would be gestures that show respect to older people?
