Jesus was Baptized

Say to the kids:Β Today, we are going to do a little cleaning.Β Go and look for something in the house that you think needs cleaning.Β Ask permission form your parents if you can clean it and if they say that it’s ok, go ahead and clean the item.Β Be careful so that you don’t break or damage it.Β Β

After the item is cleaned, it now looks like new.Β This is what our lesson this week is about - baptism.Β We will learn that baptism is like cleaning our hearts and turning away from sin.Β

Our story is about the Baptism of Jesus.Β

Let us read from Luke 3:21-22

Jesus is the Son of God.Β Why do you think He had to be baptized when He was already holy and sinless?Β

At this time, Jesus was about 30 years old and He was just about to begin his ministry.Β He wanted to honor his Father in heaven by going through baptism before starting any ministry work.Β Unlike us, Jesus lived a clean and sinless life. This is important because unlike Him, we are sinners and baptism is a way for us to show we are turning away from sin.Β In Matthew 3:15, John was hesitant to baptize Jesus but Jesus replied,Β

β€œBut Jesus answered him, β€œLet it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.”

Jesus was baptized because He wanted to fulfill all that God required.Β He identified Himself with us, in our sin, so we can be identified with His righteousness.Β Jesus did not sin. He is 100% holy because He is God’s son. Jesus was baptized even though He had no sin because He is our example.

Right after this happened, God the Father, from the heavens spoke and claimed that He is pleased with his son, even before Jesus did anything. Jesus did not have to do anything to prove himself.Β But God the Father loved Jesus the same, and that is the same way that God loves us too.

God loves us and by being baptized, we are letting people know that we are choosing to follow Him and turn away from our sin.

Parent to Kid

2-6 years old

Do you obey your parents?Β Β

Do you want to obey and follow Jesus?Β

Β Β

7-12 years old

Are you ready to follow Jesus? Are you ready to say NO to your sins?Β

Are you ready to tell everyone that you are now choosing to follow Jesus?Β

Do you think there is anything that is making it difficult for you to follow Jesus?Β

Kid to Parents

Have you been baptized? Why or why not?Β

Was it easy or difficult for you to make the decision to follow Christ?Β

Do you still sin at your age even if you already know what's right and what's wrong?

Let’s just remember that baptism doesn’t erase your sin. It is just a sign to show people publicly that you have made the decision to turn away from sin and turn to God. Sin can still be tempting us everydayΒ but God will help us turn away from it.

Do you want to be baptized? If so, tell your parents or teacher about it.Β Β

Dear God, thank You for Jesus, for being the perfect example of how to live our life today. We pray that You help us remember the things that You have done for us and the love that You have demonstrated for us so we will be able to please You in everything that we do. May You also help us to choose to do right even in the simplest things. In Jesus name, amen.Β

Have you ever wondered why baptism is significant other than it's a public declaration of our acceptance to Christ? It is important and being practiced by Christians today because Jesus commanded it.Β

Matthew 28:18-19 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”
