โ€œWould You Do What They Did?โ€

Below are some scenarios. Read them and see if they are something you would do or not and why or why not. Share your answers with your family.

1. John was given 1000 pesos to buy anything that he wanted. He didnโ€™t say thank you to his parents.
2. Anna saw her classmates cheat on the exam. She told her teacher about it.
3. Abi saw her friend be tripped by another person. She laughed at them.
4. Michael saw someone drop his wallet. He gave it back to the guy.

Today, we will be looking at what the Bible says we should and should not do. We will be learning about the traits that should be avoided as a person who loves God and be aware that some things that make us happy arenโ€™t necessarily good.

In our world today, people often think that as long as I do not hurt anyone, I am free to do whatever I want, whatever makes me happy. But if you look closely at the passage above, you will find that it describes how people are today - loving self, loving money, ungrateful, choosing to live pleasurably, no self-control, prideful and more. We may think it will make us happier but even today, there is so much discontent in this world. People still want more, they want to do things their own way, not thinking whether such things come from God or not. The Bible sternly warns us to stay away.

God wants us to be happy and He wants us to enjoy the benefits of his blessings. That is why he gave us His Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. He made us a way to be reconciled to Him because we can only find true joy in Him. All these worldly things that we go after only give us a temporary kind of happiness. They will not last. Only God can give us joy in our hearts, the kind of joy that cannot be taken away by others.

โ— Why are we always not allowed to do the things that make us happy?
โ— How can God want us to be happy when we are not allowed to do the things we want?

Many of the things that we think will make us happy will actually lead us to more destruction, sin and death. God knows this and He does not want us to go through that. That is why He gives us boundaries, rules and guidelines, like the passage above to warn us that the things we go after will only destroy us.

So how do we know what we should be doing? By reading the Bible, trusting what God tells us and obeying Him. God is truly good and we can trust Him.

Dear God, thank You for giving us your word, to teach and remind us how to love the life You want for us. You are a good God and I want to be a good person too. Please teach us to learn and see if something is truly good for us. We pray for your leading and your guidance so that I live to be a good person and live a good life as I walk with You.

Thank you for your blessing and for your love, in Jesus' name, Amen.

The word โ€œgodlinessโ€ comes from the root word and suffix: โ€œgodlyโ€ and โ€œnessโ€

โ€œGodlyโ€ is being devoted to God or being good and righteous and โ€œnessโ€ is the measure of being something or the action of something. All in all the whole word โ€œgodlinessโ€ means to act like God who is good and righteous.

As sons and daughters of God, we want to have godliness and to be as Christ-like as we possibly can, so we want to treat others just as God treats us and in turn, they treat others kindly as well.
