The tabernacle in Mosesโ€™ time and the temple in Solomonโ€™s time represent Godโ€™s desire to dwell among and fellowship with His people. Its furnishings were meant to remind them of the garden of Eden where man enjoyed fellowship with God. The separation among those who could access the tabernacle and the temple is a clear depiction of Godโ€™s holiness and manโ€™s sinfulness. There was a curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place (Exodus 26:31โ€“33). It was adorned with cherubim, representing the cherubim who were placed to guard the entrance to the garden of Eden after sin had entered the world. This showed that access to Godโ€™s presence was denied and restricted. God is holy and morally pure; man is not. Therefore, man cannot just enter Godโ€™s presence.ย

Once a year, only the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place and offer sacrifices to atone for the sins of the people. This high priest was to be blameless before God. Otherwise, if he were found lacking, he would be pulled out dead by the rope attached to his foot. For non-Hebrews like us, we would never have gotten access to the tabernacle. Thatโ€™s why, left to ourselves, we would all be in our sin, unable to save ourselves.ย

But God loves His creation and He did not want us to be separated from Him for all eternity. God did not send just anyone to make the impossible possible. He sent Jesus, who is the perfect High Priest who presented the sacrifice to God. And that sacrifice was Himselfโ€”the perfect Lamb of God.ย

The tearing of the curtain in the temple when Jesus was on the cross proves Godโ€™s love and desire to be with His creation. This symbolizes the removal of the barrier between God and humanity, allowing believers direct access to His presence. The tearing of the curtain in the temple is one of the few events recorded in all four Gospels. Two of the Gospels mention that the curtain was torn from top to bottom. If the four gospel writers deemed this event crucial, then we must take the time to understand its deeper implications. The torn curtain shows us that our salvation is Godโ€™s initiative and plan. His finished work allows us to enter His throne of grace.ย

When Jesus uttered the words, โ€œIt is finished,โ€ He was declaring that the promise had been fulfilled and the ultimate sacrifice had been made. Because Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice and the lamb that was slain, we no longer need to make sacrifices to pay for our sins. Jesusโ€™ complete work grants us complete access to God. The torn curtain signifies that believers now have direct access to God through Jesusโ€™ sacrifice (Hebrews 4:16; 10:19โ€“22).
