Many people think work is simply a way to earn a living. Others see work as something separate from their spiritual lives. But Scripture presents a very different picture. Before sin entered the world, God gave humanity work. This tells us that work is not a curse but part of Godโ€™s good design. Today weโ€™ll discover that God intended our work to be an act of worship.

Before sin entered the world, God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden to work and care for it. This reminds us that work is not a punishment for sin but part of Godโ€™s good design for humanity. Therefore, work is not a curse but a blessingโ€”a gift from God. He created us to work, giving us the privilege and responsibility of caring for what He has entrusted to us. Though work is often difficult because of the Fall, every kind of honest work still has dignity because it comes from God. Because God is the one who blessed us with work, what should our attitude be towards it?

God commanded Adam to โ€œworkโ€ and โ€œkeepโ€ the gardenโ€”to cultivate it, care for it, and faithfully steward what God had entrusted to him. Interestingly, the words translated โ€œworkโ€ and โ€œkeepโ€ are later used to describe how the priests served God in the Tabernacle (Numbers 3:7โ€“8; 8:25โ€“26). This suggests that from the very beginning, God intended our daily work to be an act of worship. Worship, therefore, is not limited to singing, praying, or serving in church. Whatever God has entrusted to us, we can do as an act of worship because we ultimately serve the Lord. If work is one expression of our worship to God, what does Colossians 3:23 teach us about the attitude we should have toward our work?

โ€ข How do you think you can be more intentional in approaching your work as worship unto God? Write this down in your journal and reflect on it for the rest of the week.ย

โ€ข Identify at least one truth from our lesson today that encouraged you. To whom can you share this truth? How will you share it with him or her?ย

โ€ข Thank God for blessing us with work as a way to worship Him and to take part in what He is doing in the world.ย

โ€ข Ask God to help us see our workโ€”even though it is hard or imperfectโ€”as a blessing and a way to worship Him. Pray for grace, strength, and excellence to work as unto the Lord, not man.ย

โ€ข Pray for our work to be a blessing not just to us and our families, but to those around us. As we worship God through our work, may others see and know Him.
