The believers in the early church acknowledged the authority and value of Godโs word that they devoted themselves to it. They knew that Scripture is alive and beneficial, for it is the inspired word of God. Thatโs why when itโs preached, we should be active participants, not just passive listeners. Preaching, teaching, hearing, and responding to Scriptureโeven the act of standing as it is readโis a form of worship. We are to approach it with awe and reverence. Real transformation canโt happen without Godโs word. Letโs look at how the preaching of Godโs word shapes us.

Through the preaching of Godโs word, we learn about God and we are also taught how to live. What we learn through preaching and our personal reading every day, helps make us ๐ธ๐ช๐ด๐ฆ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐ด๐ข๐ญ๐ท๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ (2 Timothy 3:15). There is an abundance of information outside the Bible, but itโs by preaching and teaching, hearing, meditating on, and living according to Godโs word that we can be ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฆ and ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ช๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐ฆ๐ท๐ฆ๐ณ๐บ ๐จ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฅ ๐ธ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฌ, especially His mission. What can we learn from the Bereans about learning from the Scriptures (Acts 17:11)?

Weโre all broken people who are still being sanctified. Even if weโre already in Christ, we still struggle with sin, have a hard time forgiving people who hurt us, and fail in being good stewards of our resources. But God transforms, aligns, and forms us through the faithful preaching of His word. He reveals thoughts, words, and behaviors that do not reflect Him well, which we need to unlearn and break free from, and He helps us overcome them. What does Proverbs 3:11โ12 say about the discipline of the Lord?

Formation into Christlikeness is not a one-time event. It does not happen by merely reading one Bible verse or watching a Christian video. Formation is a lifelong process that we all undergo, and this requires constant relearning through Scripture. As we regularly and actively listen to the preaching, we are trained to live according to Godโs standards, not the worldโs. We are to go back to what His word says and apply it every day. Recall a sermon you listened to recently. How did it help you apply and live out Godโs word?ย
The sermon is one of the ways we reap the benefits of Godโs word, so that we may be shaped as we are sent out. We are not just learning, relearning, and unlearning for ourselves alone, but also for the lost to encounter Christ and follow Him. This is one of the ways we worship God.

โข What practical steps might God be calling you to make for the importance of His word to be more evident in your life (e.g., taking notes of the preaching, not checking your phone during the service, and setting a time and place to search Scripture on your own)?ย
โข What thoughts, words, and behaviors regarding worship gatherings has God been reproving or correcting in you lately? Take time to meditate on His word, respond in repentance, and ask someone to hold you accountable for these this week.
โข If you were to share with someone the value of listening to the sermon, which among the insights we learned today or during the sermon would you want to emphasize? How can you encourage them to respond to Godโs word together?

โข Thank God for using His word to teach us about Him, how to live our lives, and how to participate in His mission. Ask Him to help you value the preaching of Godโs word more.
โข Pray that you would yield to the reproof and correction that come from Godโs word. Ask Him to help you submit to it completely, not just the parts that are comfortable.ย
โข Ask God for the grace to live according to His standards. Pray that you would help draw others closer to Him with your life and example as a church community.
