Jesus announced that He had come to He was declaring that Godโs kingdom had arrived. He fulfilled this mission as He sought out those who were broken, oppressed, and forgotten. In Luke 8, we see a man whose life was marked by captivity and who encountered Jesus. As Christโs Church today, letโs learn how we can participate in His ministry.

The man who was held captive by demons lived among the tombs, separated from his family and community. He had lost his dignity and even control over himself. Though others tried to restrain him with chains, nothing could address the deeper bondage that held him. This story reminds us that captivity is neither just spiritual nor just physical. Sin has fractured Godโs good creation, leaving people in bondage to spiritual deception, addiction, abuse, unjust systems, poverty, and isolation. The good news is Jesus moves toward people in their captivity, and He alone can bring true freedom. What does 2 Corinthians 3:17 say about where we can find freedom?

After the man encountered Jesus, he was never the same again. The people who knew the man saw this change. He was now sitting at Jesusโ feetโ๐ค๐ญ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ฉ๐ช๐ด ๐ณ๐ช๐จ๐ฉ๐ต ๐ฎ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฅ. Jesus transforms every dimension of our lives: He not only casts out demons but also restores our dignity and humanity. As His Church, we are to proclaim His forgiveness of sins and be agents of His compassionโwalking with those overcoming addiction, welcoming the marginalized, caring for those in need, and seeking the good of our communities. These are expressions of the gospelโs transforming power. How have you experienced captivity yourself lately? What happened after you were set free from it?

After restoring the man, Jesus sent him home, so he could proclaim Godโs grace. Jesusโ work did not end with the manโs freedomโit led to mission. In the same way, those who have experienced Christโs freedom are sent to proclaim and demonstrate the gospel wherever He places us. Having been freed by Christ, we now participate in His work of bringing others to Him. When was the last time you proclaimed and demonstrated the gospel? How did it go?

โข What stood out to you from todayโs discussion? Spend some time this week reading Luke 8:26โ39 again. What does this story reveal about Jesus and the kind of freedom He brings?ย
โข As you reflect on this passage, where do you sense God inviting you to participate in His work? How can we pray for you?
โข Who has God placed in your life who may be experiencing some form of captivity or brokenness? What is one practical way you can proclaim and demonstrate the gospel to them this week?

โข Thank God that Jesus came to proclaim liberty to the captives and continues to bring true freedom through the gospel.
โข Pray that the Holy Spirit would give us eyes to see people who are experiencing spiritual, physical, and social bondage, and hearts willing to move toward them with the compassion of Christ.
โข Ask God to use our lives and our church to faithfully proclaim and demonstrate the gospel so that more people may experience the freedom found in Jesus.
